This largely depends on your experience with these glasses. You may want to explain that they are less of a fashion statement and have more to do with reducing digital eye strain, which has been bothering you for some time. Some people will get curious about your distinct-looking yellow glasses. Of course, there is the question of looking different and attracting odd bemused stares from people in your home and office. This will almost certainly be bothersome at first, but as you go about your business, you do get used to it and may even forget about it. You are basically looking at the world through a yellow lens. Since they have a distinct yellow-orange tint, the outside world will take on a decidedly yellow hue. For maximum blue light protection, you will have to go for the max-rated amber-tinted glasses. However, there are a few downsides as well. Any reduction in blue light could help to reduce strain, even if it is minor. Since they reduce blue light, they may be a welcome addition for those suffering from digital eye strain. However, there are a few caveats to consider. That is, they seem to reduce the intensity of digital eye strain. These seem to work as intended, for us at least. Saunders allowed people to use his supermarket idea for themselves. Piggly Wiggly did not just have food, but also items like clothes and tools, much like those old general stores. So instead of having just one candy bar, the store would have other kinds of candy too. Prices were cheaper because customers could choose from more items. Allowing customers to select their own items meant that prices were cheaper, so more people started shopping there. Like today, a customer would get a basket and pick from different items they wanted. In his new supermarket, the customer no longer had to give a list to a clerk but would pick their own items. Then, on September 11, 1916, in Memphis, he opened the first supermarket in the world, Piggly Wiggly. He moved to Memphis from Montgomery County and worked in a grocery warehouse. When a young man named Clarence Saunders, saw the extra work that went into filling orders for customers, he thought of a new idea, the supermarket. Inside the first Piggly Wiggly, Wikipedia Commons. If you lived in a farming town, you may find more goods meant to help you farm, like farming tools or seeds to grow crops. These stores also carried goods to help your community, like clothes or tools. If your parents wanted flour, sugar, baking powder, or even soda, they had to accept what the general store carried. Rather a clerk would have given you the only candy bar they stocked. There would be no aisles to walk around and no selection you get to make. Let’s say you visited the general store, which would be the only store in your town (if you had one) and you wanted a candy bar. Some even see the vines covering the walls of the tomb as representative of Christ as the True Vine (John 15:1-17), rather than as the vines of Dionysus (e.g., Beckwith, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, p. 19). Nonetheless, the overwhelming opinion sees the mausoleum as Christian. Such themes, Hijmans argues, are common in Roman funerary art (“Sol,” p. 575-576). Hijmans understands the tomb to be entirely pagan, with all of the imagery together representing the cosmos, with the sea, land, and the heavens depicted this explains why the mosaic of the charioteer, which for Hijmans is Sol, is on the ceiling. In some version of their myths, Hijmans points out, Hercules and Perseus are swallowed by the monster they are attempting to rescue Hesione and Andromeda from respectively, before killing it from within (“Sol,” p. 571). He argues that the fisherman and the shepherd could easily be pagan, and looks to the Greek myth of the ketos, the sea monster which devoured maidens. Steven Hijmans sees the mosaic as purely representing Sol, and suggests that the so-called Christian identity of the other images should be questioned. This has come to be the view of a strong majority, who posit that the figure can be imagined as the new “ Sol Invictus, Sol Salutis, Sol Iustitiae,” with the popular pagan image of the sun god in his chariot, or an emperor at his apotheosis, adapted to represent the risen Christ, whose worldwide dominion is implied through his holding the globe (Beckwith, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, p. 19). This has led many scholars to argue that it is actually Christ depicted in the style of Sol, to portray Jesus as the Sun of Justice or the New Light (this is the view, for instance, of Martin Wallraff, Christus Verus Sol). The charioteer follows the iconography of the Roman sun God, Sol, which was particularly popular during the period that the tomb’s artwork is dated to (see, for example, the numismatic depictions of Sol which are roughly contemporaneous to the present mosaic, linked to below, which similarly show him holding a globe, and/or riding a chariot, with the sun’s rays extending from his head). The sea creature, of course, was presumed to be that which swallowed Jonah. Matthew 4:19 has Jesus teach Andrew and Peter to become “fishers of men,” and John 10:11 has Jesus identify as the Good Shepherd (see also the parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18:10-14 and Luke 15:1-8). In the 1940s the images in the tomb were identified as Christian. An inscription over the doorway, now lost, recorded that the tomb was built for Julius Tarpeianus and his family. These excavations uncovered sections of a necropolis from the imperial period, including the tomb of interest to us here (although this tomb was actually already accessed through a hole in 1574), known as Mausoleum M or more commonly the tomb of the Julii, originally built for the Julian family in the late-second or early-third century CE. During the 1940s Pope Pius XI had the catacombs excavated in order to find the location of Peter the Apostle’s remains, so that he himself could be buried closely to him. It can be seen from where tesserae have fallen from the mosaic that the plaster underneath was coloured in order to aid the mosaicist in following the design.īeneath St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City lies the Vatican Necropolis, which houses several tombs which were once part of an open air cemetery. The mosaic features a gold background with twisting green vines surrounding the charioteer. The right hand of the figure is missing, but possibly was “raised in an act of benediction” (John Beckwith, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, p. 19). Radiating from the head of the figure are rays, which extend upwards and sideways. The figure is dressed in a tunic with a cloak floating out behind him. However, of central concern here is the central mosaic, set on an octagonal panel in the dome of the basilica, which depicts a figure riding in the chariot of the sun, drawn by white horses (originally four, but just two survive owing to a hole made in 1574 to access the tomb), and holding a blue globe in his left hand. Among the mausolea of the Vatican lies the famous so-called “tomb of the Julii.” The tomb contains images of a fisherman (north wall), a shepherd (west wall), and of two figures in a boat with a third individual being swallowed by a sea creature (east wall). Virginia's first-round loss to 16th-seeded UMBC in 2018 came under these circumstances, as the most memorable example. None of the 32 teams to fit this profile in the modern tournament era have reached the Final Four, and 56% of them didn't survive the first two rounds. This is simply about how they were perceived entering the season.Īlabama is the only team in this year's tournament field to be a top-two seed and reside in the top 10 of the AP poll after entering the season unranked. Let's be clear, this note has nothing to do with Nate Oats or the talented squad he coaches the Crimson Tide is dangerous and among the most fun-to-watch teams in this year's Big Dance. If you're looking for a high seed to bounce before we get too deep into the madness, there is some historical data that points in the direction of a particular team: No. Why history says Alabama won't reach the Final Four 1 seed, that team has failed to make it past the first weekend more often (four times) than it has won the championship (three times). In the 16 years the selection committee has announced an overall No. 1 to lose to a 16-seed and Villanova lost in the second round. In the two prior years, Virginia became the first No. In 2019, Duke survived UCF in the second round and Virginia Tech in the Sweet 16 before losing to Michigan State in the Elite Eight. 1 overall seed reached the Final Four and eight years since it won the championship. it has been six years since the last time the No. Only Larry Bird and his Indiana State Sycamores came up just one win short when they lost to Magic Johnson and Michigan State in 1979.Īs if Gonzaga doesn't have enough history working against it. Obviously, none of the previous four won the title, but three of them made it to the Final Four. Since that Indiana team sealed the deal, this is the fifth time a team has entered the tourney without a loss. 1 overall seed - enters the NCAA tournament 26-0. That's the case this year, as Gonzaga - the No. I don't know if members of that team celebrate like players from the 1972 Miami Dolphins - the last NFL team to go undefeated - when the final unbeaten team loses each season, but if so, they've had to wait well into March a few times in recent years. That's also the last time we had a team cap off a perfect season with a national championship, as Bob Knight's Indiana Hoosiers finished 32-0. This is the first NCAA tournament without Duke and Kentucky since 1976. Will Gonzaga complete an unbeaten season? For example, for the purposes of this column, we consider Louisville the winner of the 2013 national championship game, even though its appearance has been vacated by the NCAA. In addition, all results mentioned do not recognize those that have been since vacated. The First Four stands on its own for the purposes of this column to avoid confusion. Additionally, any historical reference to the "first round" relates to the round of 64, and "second round" to the round of 32. NOTE: All stats referenced are since 1985, unless otherwise noted. What is certain is that there’s going to be some time before the dust settles and Embracer decides just how to play with their newly-acquired toys, meaning there could be a significant delay before Adam Jensen dons his built-in shades in readiness for a new adventure. Yet with the sale of Deus Ex and numerous other properties to Embracer Group as part of the acquisition of Square Enix’s three major Western studios (Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal), it isn’t exactly clear as to the direction the Swedish giants will take things in the future. The Constitution established one of the first radio broadcasting stations, WGM, which began operating on March 17, 1922, two days after the debut of the Journal's WSB. Evan Howell's family would come to own The Atlanta Constitution from 1902 to 1950. Grady was a spokesman for the " New South", encouraging industrial development as well as the founding of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. In October 1876 the newspaper was renamed as The Daily Constitution, before settling on the name The Atlanta Constitution in September 1881. The Howell family would eventually own full interest in the paper from 1902 until 1950.Ĭharlotte Perkins Gilman (pictured) wrote these articles about feminism for the Atlanta Constitution, published on December 10, 1916. He soon created the character of Uncle Remus, a black storyteller, as a way of recounting stories from African-American culture. That same year, Joel Chandler Harris began writing for the paper. In 1876 Captain Evan Howell (a former Intelligencer city editor) purchased the 50 percent interest in the paper from E. In August 1875 its name changed to The Atlanta Daily Constitution for two weeks, then to The Constitution again for about a year. The newspaper became such a force that by 1871 it had overwhelmed the Daily Intelligencer, the only Atlanta paper to survive the American Civil War. In active competition with other Atlanta newspapers, Hemphill hired special trains (one engine and car) to deliver newspapers to the Macon marketplace. In 1870 Anderson sold his one half interest in the paper to Col. He was forced to surrender his interest in the paper to Anderson and Hemphill, who then each owned one half. So my clarifying stage only requires thinking of the next actions and simply copying the existing generic next actions task/card and renaming the title/description and updating the #contexts. The flow then goes and spawns the duplicate Project task/card (attaching a link to that Area of Focus project task/card) along with 2 generic next action task/cards over on the Next Actions plan/board all while including that initial #tag_friendly_style project name/ID on every spawned task/card throughout the flow. Once OneNote syncs that project page move action and the flow is triggered, Power Automate/Flow automates the creation of the appropriate Area of Focus plan/board Project task/card (attaching that OneNote Page link to it) in Planner. I have 1 Flow/Power Automate flow set up for each area of focus (3) listening for the 3 designated OneNote sections trigger event of moving that newly captured Project Support Materials Page into them. My full system starts with Capturing in OneNote then I’ll change the new Project page’s name to a #tag_friendly_style. The only next actions in that list are the ones associated with a current active project. I like how light weight that makes my use of the app. I love the ding when I mark a next action as complete! I only have tasks coming into the “Assigned to You” smart list all other lists are empty. Now finally back to To Do, I love the UI (dark mode) and working off of that throughout the day is real pleasure. I use check lists sparingly but go to them when it makes the most sense (next actions that are almost like mini projects). All of my next actions live on separate individual tasks/cards because of how much more flexible it allows me to be (a la the aforementioned disdain with the Outlook task calendar/due date obsession). So on the NA Plan/board I can filter by project name/ID and see the project and all of its associated next actions in one view. I use the #tags for project name/ID and context because they work seamlessly across Panner and To Do. On the next actions board I manage all my next actions but also keep a project task/card with a link over to its duplicate area of focus project task/card which then has a link to the project’s specific OneNote “project support materials” page. I have 4 Plans/boards, my “Next Actions” plan/board and then 3 “Area of Focus” plans/boards which I manage my projects on. I’m really comfortable working off of a Kanban style board and I found the freedom of naming the buckets as workflow stages liberating. Then I discovered Planner and that changed everything for me. At first I tried Outlook+OneNote but found the calendar reliance of Outlook tasks too restrictive and I became annoyed after I discovered To Do and how “in-sync” it and Outlook are. I opted for the O/MS365 ecosystem for my system about a year ago when I was introduced to gtd. So I do all of the organizing and clarifying over in Planner and To Do is simply my slick, Next Actions UI. I use To Do strictly for my daily to dos leveraging the “Assigned to You” list with ONLY my next actions I’ve assigned myself to over in Planner. I will be sure to do a blog post on that in the near future.Click to expand.sorry TL DR. In conclusion, I will be trying to finish reading David Allen’s book and incorporating his system for 2016 planning needs. The only problem with this part of the system is that sometimes I get my ideas on my bike, or in the shower and then it’s forgotten by the time I’m at my destination or out of the shower… how to solve that problem? Ideas are welcome!!! I REALLY NEED THIS!!! A place where I can just brain dump! And I do this in a bullet journal way. Having the to-do’s on a separate part, and divided into categories means that when I all of sudden have that unexpected free time, I can look and see what tasks I can do on my phone, or fine tune a project, or whatever! lolĪnother thing that I really like about this is the capture part. So things come up, and then I get anxious and demotivated because I see all these to-do’s that I planned which I hadn’t accomplished. My life/ work/ schedule is very unpredictable (and I have a problem saying “no” to people”. I think it is because I get so frustrated seeing tasks scheduled which I didn’t complete or wasn’t able to do on that day. Of course I had to ask myself: why did it work? And I liked it! I thought that I was a person who would hate having my to-do’s separated from my calendar pages, and I still am hesitant about it (old habits die hard), but actually, if I did it right, I was more productive. |
